Just weeks before our daughter was born, we heard the words, “Your baby’s heart is not plumbed the way we expect to see it.” She was born with Congenital Heart Defects. Hours after she was born, our baby girl was transferred from Northside Forsyth Hospital in Cumming, GA to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA). Meredith, my wife, was still at Northside Forsyth in Cumming, I had a 5-year-old son (Joseph) at home who needed to be cared for, and my newborn little girl (Elizabeth) was now an hour away. In August of 2021, my crew and I responded to an arson fire after the Sheriff’s Office received a domestic call. Once on scene, I discovered fire in the basement of the home, and it quickly began to grow. Black smoke filled the air and the temperature rose with every second. I looked back at my crew and told everyone to clear out; the fire had made the conditions too dangerous, and a flashover was eminent. I ended up being caught in the flashover as I was trying to leave the house, and I became disoriented. I have four children, three of whom are in college right now. Having one kid in college can already be a financial strain, so one could imagine how three would be even more of a burden in today’s economy. Being in public safety, you tend to fall into a tax bracket that is too much for many financial aid pathways but not enough to support your children the way you wish you could. We were incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to apply for scholarships through B.A.D.G.E. for each of my children. Scholarships can be hard to come by, and this opportunity gave us a chance that was within reach. MORE...
